Section K – Video Book Review

Posted in Canada, Video Book Reviews with tags , , , , , on October 24, 2011 by Nicole Chardenet

It’s been awhile since I posted a video book review.  That’s for a number of reasons, not the least of which being I had to do a lot of reading for my new job and didn’t think anyone would be much interested in hearing about Lean Labor or The Project Workforce: Managing People and Projects In A Flat World.  Then there was that one book which you probably WOULD have been interested in, but I was all like, “No way am I reviewing THAT!  I don’t want Mom to know about that one!”  And finally, I just haven’t had a lot of time this summer, but here, finally, about two months after I finally completed it, is Section K by Tim Carter, a Canadian dude.  His humorous fantasy leads me to realize I am not, in fact, the only humorous fantasy writer in Canada.  So, I may have to kill him.

Well, maybe not.  His humor is a bit, uh, earthier than mine, but it IS funny, and so here is my book review.

Video Book Review: “Sex at Dawn”, Or Clan of the Cave Slut, if you prefer

Was early man (and woman) polygamous and polyamorous?  According to this book, our cave forecritters had sex with everyone who didn’t move fast enough, and argues that we modern humans aren’t much different (yeah, we’re looking at you, Tiger Woods, Adam Giam-boner, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and of course we won’t forget you, Madonna!)  And, they ask, if that’s what the default setting is for both genders (they don’t fall for all that, “men are wired to be sluts and women are wired to settle on one person” stuff), then maybe should we rethink our ideas on mongamy, since no one’s been really practicing it anyway?

It might not turn you into a politically correct sex machine but it will definitely make you think.  This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time!

Now excuse me, I’m off to shag the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Kidding, kidding!!!  Yes really.

You think if I was going to become a post-modern cave slut that I’d start by shagging THAT group of total losers?!?!

Video book review: Culture Clash – Managing In A Multicultural World

Posted in Video Book Reviews with tags , , , , , on August 6, 2011 by Nicole Chardenet

Don’t you just hate it when you travel to foreign countries and those stupid people there piss you off by doing things differently from you and not knowing how to comport themselves in public and sometimes they’re so rude they speak gibberish in front of you?  Don’t you just hate that???  Well I decided to do something about it.  Since I can’t teach the rest of the world how to behave I thought I’d learn how to deal with people in other countries.  Hell, I don’t even have to leave Toronto to do that!  All I gotta do is step outside and it’s just wall-to-wall immigrants!  Or it would be if the outside had walls.  And, okay, I’m an immigrant too.  To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure if anyone in my entire neighbourhood was born here in Canada.

So I read a cool book on how to get along with people in other cultures so’s they don’t embarrass themselves around me the next time I’m in a foreign country, y’know? It’s called Culture Clash: Managing In A Multicultural World by authors H. Ned Seelye and Alan Seelye-James.

And so, voilà, here is my video book review:

Video Book Review: Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain

Posted in Geeks/Nerds, Science/Technology, Uncategorized, Video Book Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , , on July 26, 2011 by Nicole Chardenet

I’m a brainy chick these days.  Well, I’m reading a lot of brainy books lately.  Books about the brain and neuroscience.  And books about Buddism and the Dalai Lama, who’s as into brainy stuff as much as I am.

So imagine my excitement when I was in a secondhand bookstore and I found this book by Sharon Begley on how to rewire and change your brain to do almost anything.  So here’s my next video book review, hope you don’t mind!  (Ar ar!)

Well pardon me, I’ve got a hot date tonight ;)

Video Book Review: Understanding Men’s Passages by Gail Sheehy

Posted in Pop Culture, Video Book Reviews on July 9, 2011 by Nicole Chardenet

Since I read so much, I wondered, why am I not doing book reviews on my blog?  Or better yet, video book reviews?  Funny video book reviews?  Apart from the fact that I’m usually too busy stalking people I went to kindergarten with on Facebook and chasing the flying poop monsters o’ doom off my balcony?

Since I’m too lazy to write out a book review, I decided to video them instead.  Beginning with Gail Sheehy’s excellent analysis of the changes men go through as they age, Understanding Men’s Passages.

Hopefully you’ll find it funny.  There’s humor in almost everything, isn’t there?
